Sample Essay 1

The increasing use of technology in the workplace has sparked debates on its impact on employment prospects for different age groups. While some believe that technology primarily benefits younger individuals, making it harder for older people to compete, I only partially agree with this view. Although younger people often have an edge due to their familiarity with modern technology, older workers also possess valuable skills that can be advantageous in certain professional settings.


To begin with, younger employees generally have a natural aptitude for adapting to new technological advancements, which can be a significant advantage in many industries. Growing up with digital tools and devices, they are often more comfortable using new software, applications, and equipment. For example, in entry-level jobs that require frequent use of digital communication tools like Slack or project management software like Trello, younger workers tend to excel due to their tech-savvy nature. This adaptability not only increases their productivity but also makes them more desirable candidates for roles that require rapid learning and flexibility.


However, it is important to recognize that older workers bring a wealth of experience and specialized knowledge to the workplace, which can be invaluable, particularly in professional roles. While they may not be as quick to adopt new technology, their extensive experience often allows them to excel in positions that require deep expertise and long-term training. For instance, an experienced surgeon is likely to have a better understanding of complex medical procedures and specialized equipment, such as robotic surgical systems, compared to a younger, less experienced doctor. This expertise is highly valued in many fields, suggesting that older workers have significant strengths that complement those of younger employees.


In conclusion, while younger individuals may have an advantage in adapting to new technology, this does not necessarily make it harder for older people to secure jobs. Both age groups have unique strengths that are valuable in different contexts, and the key lies in recognizing and leveraging these diverse skills in the workplace. Therefore, I believe that the impact of technology on employment prospects is more nuanced than simply favouring one age group over another.

Sample Essay 2

Over the past few decades, technology has been increasingly adopted in the workplace. Some people think that this phenomenon has favoured younger candidates in job competitions and put the older ones at a disadvantage. Despite the fact that younger people are often more familiar with the latest technological inventions, I do not fully agree with this view.


Indeed, the young, with their healthier and less degenerated nervous systems, can often adapt to new situations more readily than the elders, including the use of new technologies, which can lead to some advantages in many occasions. Competing for a job is an example, and it is particularly true for non-professional entry-level jobs. In my area of work, human resource management, I have found that many elderly people who attempted low-level office jobs did not have the basic computer skills required, because they were not familiar with new technological devices such as tablets and smartphones. Those from younger generations on the other hand, usually demonstrated good ability working with these machines.


Applying for professional jobs, however, can be a different scenario. Although professional jobs often involve operating high-tech equipment as well, it is the highly specialised devices that require long term training the workers are facing, instead of common IT gadgets seen in the computer shops. The older workers in this case, with their more intensive experiences and deeper knowledge, often perform better in these types of work, and therefore give them better chances of securing a job. For example, older cardiologists, with their longer working years, tend to be more sophisticated in operating catheters to insert coronary stents, which makes them more favourable by most medical centres while hiring new doctors.


In conclusion, younger candidates may have an edge while applying for non-professional jobs due to them being more familiar with the common new technology; the elders however, have better chances with professional ones because of their deeper understanding of specialised equipment.
