The chart illustrates the variations in the frequency of three different types of crime - burglary, car theft, and robbery - in Newport city centre from 2003 to 2012. A clear trend is evident for each crime category over the decade, highlighting a significant reduction in burglary rates, a steady increase in car theft, and relative stability in robbery incidents.


Initially, burglary was the most prevalent crime, with figures starting at around 3500 incidents in 2003. However, this crime experienced a substantial decline over the subsequent years, plummeting to below 1500 by 2012. In contrast, car theft displayed a gradual increase after a brief decline in the mid-2000s. Beginning with about 2700 incidents in 2003, the rate of car thefts exhibited fluctuations and reached its peak at nearly 2800 in 2012. However, the most significant number of thefts occurred in 2004, with approximately 2850 incidents, making it the year with the highest reported thefts.


Robbery, characterized by theft from the person, showed relatively stable figures throughout the decade. Commencing at around 600 incidents in 2003, robbery rates witnessed a modest peak at about 800 in 2005, followed by a slight decrease and stabilization around 700 incidents by 2012.

The line graph compares the changing rates of crime in Newport city centre over the years from 2003 to 2012. Overall, the rate of burglary decreased, while that of car theft increased. In contrast, the number of robberies remained essentially unchanged.


Regarding burglary, which started at just below 3500, it was the most common crime in the inner city in 2003. After that, it peaked at nearly 3750 in 2004, dipped to about 1100 in 2008, grew to just below 1500 in 2009, and then levelled off in the remaining three years.


Turning to car theft, the incidents started at approximately 2700 in 2003. From 2006 to 2012, the figures oscillated between just over 2000 and nearly 2800, concluding the period on a high note. Notably, 2004 marked the peak year for car theft, with incidents reaching around 2900, the highest in the observed timeframe.


As for robbery, which was the least common crime during the time frame, the number began at about 600. It rose to nearly 850 in 2005, then dipped to 500 in 2008, and recovered to roughly 750 in 2010.
